Hamilton, Anthony

   Born in Roscrea, in the county of Tipperary, Ireland, Anthony, or Antoine, Hamilton came to France after the execution of the English king Charles I. He became the biographer of his brother-in-law, the count de Gramont (see gramont, house oF), published in 1715 under the title Mémoires de la vie du comte de Gramont, also known under the name Histoire amoureuse de la cour d'Angleterre, written in a style worthy of the great memoirists of the 18th century. Antoine Hamilton has also written a ersion of Mille et Une Nuits (The Thousand and One Nights), and diverse poems (Œuvres mélées en prose et en vers, posthumous, 1731).
